RESUMEN

Background: Students' internship year is critical for dental interns to develop the skills and knowledge to perform complete denture rehabilitation (CDR). Online learning is recommended because students can't go to the clinic with the outbreak of COVID-19. This study aims to assess students' intentions toward online learning to improve teaching quality and ensure students master the CDR. Methods: A questionnaire-based online survey was conducted to evaluate internship students’ background and attitudes to online learning of CDR. The questionnaire consists of three parts and 20 structured questions regarding students’ experience with online learning, students’ knowledge background about CDR, and students’ attitude about online learning CDR. 63 dental interns, including 19 male and 44 female undergraduate dental students, participated in this survey. Results: 93.65% of the 63 students have participated in online learning, 76.19% believe it is necessary to provide online instruction, and 80.95 % plan to join in the future. 71.42% of the students think they are ready for online learning on CDR. Then, we evaluated students’ knowledge background about CDR. Survey results indicate most students believe they are unprepared to perform CDR in the clinic and only a small percentage of students are familiar with the diagnosis, treatment process, and operation of CDR. Fortunately, interns are incredibly optimistic about the prospect of learning complete dentures online. According to our survey, 60.90% of students enjoy learning online, 71.43% are motivated to continue online learning, and 82.54% believe online learning of CDR is helpful. Conclusion: According to the survey results, adopting online learning may be a practical solution to guarantee students' quality of oral clinical placements and address the growing shortage of clinical placement opportunities worldwide. Furthermore, the effectiveness and efficiency of online learning need to be further evaluated to ensure they can enhance dental interns’ knowledge level and practical ability of CDR.

RESUMEN

Background The Coronavirus Diseases 2019 (COVID-19) directly affects HIV prevention and sexual health services utilization among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study investigated changes in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing utilization among MSM before and after the COVID-19 pandemic received initial control in Shenzhen, China. Methods This study was a sub-analysis of a prospective observational cohort study conducted among MSM in Shenzhen, China between August 2020 and May 2021. Participants were recruited through outreaching in gay venues, online recruitment, and peer referral. Participants completed a baseline online survey between August and September 2020 and a follow-up online survey between April and May 2021. This study was based on 412 MSM who reported to be HIV-negative/unknown sero-status at baseline, 297 (72.1%) of them completed the follow-up online survey. Multilevel logistic regression models (level 1: sources of recruitment;level 2: individual participants) were fitted. Results When comparing follow-up data with baseline data, a significant increase was observed in the uptake of any type of HIV testing (77.9% at Month 6 vs. 59.2% at baseline, p < 0.001). After adjusting for age group, education level, current employment status and monthly personal income, two predisposing factors were associated with higher uptake of HIV testing during the follow-up period. They were: (1) condomless anal intercourse with male non-regular male sex partners at follow-up only (AOR: 5.29, 95%CI: 1.27, 22.01) and (2) sanitizing before and after sex at baseline (AOR: 1.26, 95%CI: 1.02, 1.47). Regarding enabling factors, utilization of HIV testing (AOR: 3.90, 95%CI: 2.27, 6.69) and STI testing (AOR: 2.43, 95%CI: 1.20, 4.93) 6 months prior to the baseline survey was associated with higher uptake of HIV testing during the follow-up period. Having the experience that HIV testing service providers reduced service hours during the follow-up period was also positively associated with the dependent variable (AOR: 3.45, 95%CI: 1.26, 9.41). Conclusions HIV testing utilization among MSM might rebound to the level before the COVID-19 outbreak after the pandemic received initial control in China. This study offered a comprehensive overview to identify potential reasons that can influence the uptake of HIV testing among Chinese MSM.

Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) is a member of the genus Alphacoronavirus in the family Coronaviridae. It causes acute watery diarrhoea and vomiting in piglets with high a mortality rate. Currently, the GII genotype, PEDV, possesses a high separation rate in wild strains and is usually reported in immunity failure cases, which indicates a need for a portable and sensitive detection method. Here, reverse transcription–recombinase aided amplification (RT-RAA) was combined with the Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR)/Cas12a system to establish a multiplexable, rapid and portable detection platform for PEDV. The CRISPR RNA (crRNA) against Spike (S) gene of GII PEDV specifically were added into the protocol. This system is suitable for different experimental conditions, including ultra-sensitive fluorescence, visual, UV light, or flow strip detection. Moreover, it exhibits high sensitivity and specificity and can detect at least 100 copies of the target gene in each reaction. The CRISPR/Cas12a detection platform requires less time and represents a rapid, reliable and practical tool for the rapid diagnosis of GII genotype PEDV.

RESUMEN

One challenge of machine translation is how to quickly adapt to unseen domains in face of surging events like COVID-19, in which case timely and accurate translation of in-domain information into multiple languages is critical but little parallel data is available yet. In this paper, we propose an approach that enables rapid domain adaptation from the perspective of unsupervised translation. Our proposed approach only requires in-domain monolingual data and can be quickly applied to a preexisting translation system trained on general domain, reaching significant gains on in-domain translation quality with little or no drop on general-domain. We also propose an effective procedure of simultaneous adaptation for multiple domains and languages. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt that aims to address unsupervised multilingual domain adaptation.

RESUMEN

The recently emerged pathogenic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread rapidly, leading to a global COVID-19 pandemic. Binding of the viral spike protein (SARS-2-S) to cell surface receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) mediates host cell infection. In the present study, we demonstrate that in addition to ACE2, the S1 subunit of SARS-2-S binds to HDL and that SARS-CoV-2 hijacks the SR-B1-mediated HDL uptake pathway to facilitate its entry. SR-B1 facilitates SARS-CoV-2 entry into permissive cells by augmenting virus attachment. MAb (monoclonal antibody)-mediated blocking of SARS-2-S-HDL binding and SR-B1 antagonists strongly inhibit HDL-enhanced SARS-CoV-2 infection. Notably, SR-B1 is co-expressed with ACE2 in human pulmonary and extrapulmonary tissues. These findings revealed a novel mechanism for SARS-CoV-2 entry and could provide a new target to treat SARS-CoV-2 infection.

RESUMEN

Abstract The recently emerged pathogenic SARS-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread rapidly, leading to a global pandemic. In this study, we show that SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with clinically significant lower level of HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), which can be used as indicators of disease severity and poor prognosis. Importantly, we found the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 (SARS-2-S) bound to HDL. Antagonists of HDL receptor-Scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-B1), strongly inhibited SARS-CoV-2 infection. Notably, the lipids transfer function of SR-B1 was indispensable for this inhibition, offering explanations for the reduced serum HDL level observed in COVID-19 patients. Basing on findings here, we speculate that SR-B1-mediated pulmonary HDL-vitamin E uptake could participate in mediating SARS-CoV-2 infection of lung cells, and the unique expression profile of SR-B1 may also affect SARS-CoV-2 cell and tissue tropism. These findings might help to provide further insights into viral transmission, pathological characteristics and reveal therapeutic targets.
